Building a Town - Day 3

There are a few free resources I looked at for creating a town:

  1. City Kit (Suburban) - https://kenney.nl/assets/city-kit-suburban
  2. Pandazole - City Town Lowpoly Pack
  3. SimplePoly City - Low Poly Assets
  4. Toon City Pack
  5. Toony Tiny City Demo

I initially chose 4. Toon City Pack as it had a decent amount of variety and looked good. However after trying it out, getting the items to line up proved to be more work than I wanted. So I used "SimplePoly City - Low Poly Assets" where the roads were easy to align using a grid size of 10.

I first put some intersections down, then the roads. Then I tried creating a prefab of an L. Two L's would make a square. I made one square of 2x2 and another one of 3x3. Finally I started creating building blocks. a 2x2 of apartment buildings and a 3x3 of them. After that I think a 2x2 and even a 3x3 might be too small. Nevertheless I'll leave it for now. I created a prefab of the blocks.

Later on I suspect I'll have to revisit the roads, perhaps add triggers or custom scripts so that I can create automated cars. I also might need to modify the building blocks: add colliders, change features or perhaps add a script that randomizes the layout and look.

There is plenty of room for improvement in this town. If there is time I'll come back to it. For now I have a town I can drive around in, which will allow me to continue development.
